- Sci.virtual-worlds postings README file Jan. 10, 1993
-
- Past postings to sci.virtual-worlds are stored in directories by year.
- Each file in a directory contains all of the postings during a given
- month of that year.
- Each monthly archive file contains many files, where each filename
- represents when the file was posted in the format:
- year-month-day.number
- year, month, and day are two-digit numbers, and number is simply the
- order in which this particular posting was put up on this day.
-
- To extract the files from any given archive...
- 1. Be sure and ftp in binary mode.
- 2. Do: compress -d filename.tar.Z
- 3. Do: tar -xvf filename.tar
- 4. The files will be extracted from the archive into an
- appropriately-named directory.
-
- If you want to get everything from a specific year, you can cd into
- the year directory and do an "mget *".
-
- The utilities "tar" and "compress" are available on all UNIX machines.
- They are also available for the Mac-- check out your favorite Mac FTP
- site (wuarchive.wustl.edu?) for the proper utilities.
-
- The files for August through November 1990 were a bit munged during
- transit to their current resting place, and thus may not be exact
- duplicates of the postings from that time period.
-
- All archives now extract into their own directories-- so, you don't
- have to worry about munging your current directory up when you extract
- from the archive.
-
- If you have any questions regarding the archives, please let me know.
